There are a lot of scary thoughts that can arise when starting something new and putting yourself in an environment that you’re not completely comfortable in. Welcome to being a human, this is totally normal! Gyms have historically been a male-dominated space (which is absolutely changing) but because of this, not everyone feels comfortable entering these spaces! Some spaces are better than others at providing safe and inclusive environments for all, but if you’re finding yourself feeling a bit nervous about going to the gym, check out the suggestions below!
Here are 5 strategies to help you feel more confident heading into the gym.
1. Remember that it’s you versus you!
It’s easy to think that people around you could be judging you, but in reality, most people are too worried about themselves to be paying attention to you! Do your thing and focus on yourself.
Our strength coaches are here to help you pursue your athletic goals and build confidence in the gym
2. Go to the gym before or after peak hours!
Most public gyms will be busiest first thing in the morning (around 6-9am) as well as just after work hours (around 5-7pm).
3. Bring a friend!
4. Go in with a plan!
Going in with a plan for your workout can help give your gym sessions some structure as well as keep you focused on the task at hand. This prevents you from feeling lost or like you’re unsure of what to do.
If you need help with developing a plan to suit your needs, we can help! Our strength coaches offer monthly programming that’s tailored to your goals while keeping you accountable.
5. Practice good technique!
Movement is a skill to be learned, and practicing good movement technique can help you create more confidence in your abilities when heading to the gym by yourself.
If you’re unsure about your exercise technique, we can help! Our strength coaches will help ensure that the exercises you are doing are done correctly to make sure you’re avoiding injury and getting the most out of your workouts, while teaching you some new ones along the way.
Now go out and chase your goals!
